The Outsider: Themes from the Work of Daniel Day-Lewis
Andrew in Cineaste
The Spring 2008 issue of Cineaste has hit the web and newsstands. This is a particularly special issue because our very own Andrew Hedden authored the cover story: "The Outsider: Themes from the Work of Daniel Day-Lewis."
So much has been said about Day-Lewis' performance in There Will Be Blood but, aside from superficial comparisons to Gangs of New York, not enough articles have put it within the context of the rest of his work. Leave it to Andrew, the man with the DDL mousepad (true story!), to solve that. It's an insightful look at one of the most talented and thoughtful actors working today and definitely worth the six bucks the issue will cost you so go out and buy it today. Afterwards, feel free to leave comments and tell him what you thought.
For a previously published piece by Andrew, check out what might be the finest piece of criticism ever written about Garbage Pail Kids: The Movie.
Elsewhere, you can find writing by another one of our writers, Raph, at the NY Press so check it online or pick up a copy before you hop on the subway if you live in New York.

I just finished reading this! And I thought to myself, Wait... isn't that the guy from Lucidscreening? Congratulations on a great article, especially for someone like me, who was (almost literally) blown away by There Will Be Blood but (unfortunately) hasn't seen any other DDL movies. Clearly, a Netflix queue overhaul is in order.
One of the things I've found most interesting in listening to interviews with DDL, especially having only seen him as Daniel Plainview, is how soft-spoken he is, almost shy. I'd formulated my own theory, that this was indicative of excellent acting chops, a guy who's a blank canvas who lets his role envelop his entire body... but his quote about being drawn to characters who have difficulty communicating offers another explanation that wouldn't have occurred to me.
Which is all to say: great article. Keep up the good work.
