V for Vendetta
My Two Pence
Because Andrew has already written a piece on this film, I'll refrain from speaking at any length about the film.
Upon learning that V for Vendetta was based on a graphic novel which was supposidly superior to the film, I figured it was a a good bet that the book was indeed better and as a result, a good idea to read the book before seeing the movie. This would allow me to go into the film with preconcieved notions as opposed to the other way around.
The book was great. Alan Moore is an incredibly talented writer who wears his heart on his sleave but doesn't let it cloud his judgement. The graphic novel of V for Vendetta demonstrated that he has a grip on reality and understands the value of different perspectives. I've also recently begun reading his classic, Watchmen, and with each passing chapter am amazed by his incredible ability to structure a story.
While V for Vendetta had some interesting ideas and shades of brilliance trying to force itself onto the screen, it seems that anything Moore had to do with the film was suppressed by the filmmakers who instead opted for the intellectual slums of the action movie.
The film is little more than a typical action film lended an aire of credibility by a mysterious main character who spouts maxims that one would expect to find scribbled on the notebook of a high school sophomore wearing a Che Guevera shirt.
